Kernow Vets clinics are encouraging all pet owners in St Austell, Bodmin, Lostwithiel and Liskeard to get fit with your dogs. After all, they say that exercising with a friend is the key to success – so why not exercise with man’s best friend?
Kernow Vets surgeries have seen a rise in pet obesity cases in our clinics in Cornwall, with many owners unaware that their pet is an unhealthy weight. Kernow Vets have launched the ‘Waist Watchers‘ campaign to highlight that pets should be a healthy weight, and the best part is that pets and their owners can help each other to achieve this.
Incorporating your dog into your exercise or walking routine can make weight loss fun for both of you. Try our tips to ensure you and your dog are feeling fit this spring:
1) Make the most of Cornwall’s beautiful countryside by taking a run with your canine chum on the beach, on the moors or even around the block.
2) Set a daily routine with your dog. Try to walk or run at the same time each day – the mornings are best to help your dog work out the pent-up energy accumulated during the night.
3) Motivate each other. The more you run with your dog, the more your dog will expect it. On those days where you really don’t fancy it, remember that your dog still will, and allow this to serve as motivation for you both
4) Simplicity is key. Exercise needn’t be hard, in fact it should be fun. If a run doesn’t appeal, incorporating a series of throwing and catching games to your regular walks will add interest and variety – as well as helping you both to get moving.
Kernow Vets is offering tips and advice to owners as well as raising awareness of our free programme for overweight pets. Our team of trained ‘Waist Watchers’ assess the pet and provide all the information you require to help your pudgy pooch or fat feline lose weight.
